MBL is one of Germany's most respected high-end audio manufacturers, known for combining innovative acoustic engineering with outstanding industrial design and craftsmanship. Founded in Berlin in 1979, the company set out to address a key limitation of conventional loudspeakers: real instruments radiate sound in all directions, while standard speakers project it toward a single listening position.
The result was the Radialstrahler, a loudspeaker that radiates sound in 360 degrees, recreating the physical presence of live music throughout the room. MBL builds complete systems around it, including CD and digital players, preamplifiers, and power amplifiers of reference quality, all developed and hand-built in Berlin.
For more than forty years, MBL has pursued a singular goal: to do more than play back recordings, but to transport listeners into the heart of a performance, where music feels dynamic, tangible, and alive with emotion.

The Radialstrahler Principle
Every MBL loudspeaker is designed with a core principle: sound should fill the room rather than be directed at a specific point. Radialstrahler drivers use thin, curved lamellas made of carbon fibre and aluminium, arranged to ensure even sound distribution in all horizontal directions as the voice coil moves.
This approach creates a unique listening experience. The soundstage remains stable and immersive regardless of your position in the room. Instruments are precisely positioned, voices gain depth and dimension, and the recording venue's acoustics are faithfully reproduced.
This engineering reflects MBL’s United in Music philosophy. Like a live concert, which fills the entire hall, the Radialstrahler creates a shared sound field at home. All frequency units follow the same omnidirectional principle, allowing the speaker to function as a single, cohesive source, similar to an acoustic instrument.
Manufacturing these transducers requires skilled manual craftsmanship. Each lamella is individually formed, balanced, and assembled by hand in Berlin. Every finished driver is measured and paired for optimal performance. This complex process distinguishes MBL from other manufacturers.
From Cadenza to the 101 X-Treme
The MBL catalogue features three product lines, each built on the same core principles and distinguished by their level of ambition. The Cadenza Line introduces omnidirectional sound through the 126 compact loudspeaker and 120 floorstander, paired with Cadenza electronics, offering the Radialstrahler experience for typical living spaces. The Noble Line offers a balanced option, combining the N11 preamplifier, N15 mono amplifiers, and N31 CD-DAC with the 116 loudspeaker, delivering reference technology in an elegant, home-friendly format.
The Reference Line represents the pinnacle of the MBL range. The 101 E MKII, a four-way omnidirectional system, features stacked Radialstrahler units for bass, midrange, and treble, and has set the standard at high-end exhibitions for decades. The 101 X-Treme MKII, a four-tower system with dedicated bass architecture, has received multiple Best Sound awards at the Munich High End Show and is widely recognised as one of the finest loudspeakers available.
The electronics are engineered to the same uncompromising standards. The 9011 power amplifier provides high, load-stable current from a precisely machined chassis. The 6010 D preamplifier and 1611 F converter complete a system where every component is designed, tuned, and manufactured in Berlin.
Each cabinet is available in a range of finishes, including piano lacquers, precious metals, and custom colours, reflecting the system’s role in the home’s architecture. For MBL, craftsmanship extends from the crossover to the final screw.

Handcrafted in Berlin
MBL operates as a true manufactory. Development, machining, assembly, and final voicing are all completed in Berlin, with skilled technicians—not robots—handling critical tasks—specialists trained for years, gluing and balancing Radialstrahler lamellas. Electronics are assembled in small batches and undergo burn-in before measurement.
Each loudspeaker pair leaves the factory with matched drivers and a documented measurement protocol. Every amplifier is auditioned before shipping. This rigorous quality control ensures MBL systems perform reliably for decades and allows the company to service components built thirty years ago.
This approach also limits production and creates waiting lists for flagship models. At MBL, craftsmanship determines the pace of business, not the reverse.

Why choose MBL?
MBL addresses a common issue with high-end systems: they often sound mechanical. In contrast, an MBL system creates the experience of a live event in your room.
The omnidirectional design transforms daily listening in ways that specifications cannot capture. The soundstage remains consistent throughout the room, so music becomes a shared experience rather than a solitary one. Guests enjoy the same immersive sound as the host, and even background music maintains its depth and dimensionality. For those who truly value music in their lives, this is the system’s most important feature.
At natural listening levels, the Radialstrahler provides the physical sensation of instruments moving air, similar to a live concert. A grand piano has presence and scale, a voice is positioned at human height between the speakers, and a drum kit is placed with authentic depth. This effect is not an audio illusion; it reflects how sound behaves when radiated rather than projected.
There are also practical advantages. MBL manufactures complete systems, developing loudspeakers, amplification, and digital sources together. This ensures that Cadenza, Noble, or Reference systems are electrically and tonally coherent, eliminating compatibility concerns. The build quality is exceptional, service support is long-term, and finish options allow you to customize the system to your preferences.
Trust is also essential - Referenz Studio is the official MBL distributor in Latvia. Every product includes a full factory warranty, direct access to the Berlin manufactory, and professional delivery, installation, and in-room calibration.
The best way to appreciate MBL is to experience it firsthand. Our Riga showroom features a permanently installed MBL system in a dedicated listening room. You are welcome to book an audition, bring your preferred recordings, and discover the difference the Radialstrahler makes. Most first-time listeners report not just impressive sound, but the sensation that musicians are truly present. This experience has defined MBL since 1979, and once heard, it is difficult to live without.
