Børresen

Beyond conventional loudspeakers

Michael Børresen's assault on loudspeaker convention: record-low inductance drivers, 3D-printed zirconium and titanium, hand-built in Denmark.

Michael Børresen, chief designer of Audio Group Denmark and a leading innovator in loudspeaker engineering, founded Børresen Acoustics and continually challenged conventional design. He questioned the use of iron in motor systems due to its energy storage, the acceptance of unnecessarily high driver inductance, and the reliance on outdated materials when advanced options like zirconium and titanium are now available.

These questions led to the development of unique loudspeakers featuring patented iron-free motor systems with exceptionally low inductance, membranes made from layered composites, and flagship models with structural components 3D-printed from zirconium and titanium.

Founded in Aalborg alongside Aavik electronics and Ansuz cabling, Børresen has quickly become a leader in high-end audio. Its 0-series and M-series are among the most acclaimed loudspeakers of the modern era, while the new X and A series make this innovation more accessible.

The Iron-Free Revolution

Most conventional loudspeaker drivers use iron motor systems, which concentrate magnetic flux cost-effectively but introduce signal distortion. Iron stores and releases energy as hysteresis, saturates unevenly, and increases the voice coil's inductance, causing the driver's performance to vary with level and frequency.

Michael Børresen's patented solution eliminates iron from the motor system. Instead, Børresen drivers use precisely arranged neodymium magnets and copper pole rings, resulting in driver inductance of approximately 0.04 millihenry, about one-tenth that of standard designs. This ensures a consistent load at all levels, uniform response from soft to loud passages, and minimal signal coloration.

The membranes are engineered to complement the motors. Børresen's composite sandwich cones, featuring carbon skins over honeycomb cores, offer high stiffness and low mass. The ribbon-style planar tweeter provides similarly rapid response at higher frequencies. In the flagship series, pole rings are machined from silver, structural elements are 3D-printed in zirconium for superior acoustic damping, and titanium baskets are printed in complex shapes not achievable by casting.

These material choices are made to achieve measurable reductions in stored energy. Lower stored energy enables sound reproduction that more accurately conveys music in real time.

X, A, Z, 0, M: The Ascent

Børresen’s product range applies consistent engineering principles, with each model offering increased performance.

The X series introduces the Børresen approach, with the X1 stand-mount and X2, X3, and X6 floorstanders featuring iron-free motors and ribbon tweeters at highly competitive prices. The X3, in particular, has been recognized as a benchmark for value in high-end audio. The new A series, launching in 2026, further enhances these designs with upgraded motors and crossovers, positioned between the X series and the more advanced ranges.

The Z series, comprising the Z1, Z2, Z3, and Z5, was Børresen’s original line, featuring proprietary driver technology and curved cabinets made from aircraft-grade laminates. This series established the brand’s reputation. The 0-series advances materials innovation with silver pole rings and zirconium 3D-printed components. The 01 stand-mount and 02 floorstander have achieved reference status in international reviews.

At the top of the range, the M-series represents uncompromising design, with nearly every structural component printed or machined from zirconium and titanium. Produced in very limited quantities each year, these models are considered among the finest loudspeakers available.

All models are hand-built in Aalborg, pair-matched, and personally voiced by Michael Børresen. They are designed to perform optimally with Aavik electronics and Ansuz cabling, which are developed in the same facility. Each progression in the range delivers measurable and audible improvements, consistently reducing stored energy and enhancing musical performance.

Printed in Zirconium, Voiced in Aalborg

Børresen's flagship manufacturing employs advanced techniques such as additive printing in zirconium and titanium, precision machining of silver into pole rings, and hand-laid composite membranes. The Aalborg facility operates proprietary 3D-metal printers, a capability unmatched by other loudspeaker manufacturers.

However, the final instrument remains unchanged: the human ear. Michael Børresen and his team voice each model based on their experience with live music, and they measure and match every production pair before shipping.

This combination of advanced materials and artisanal finishing defines the brand: a zirconium basket, produced with aerospace-level precision, supports a driver tuned with the care of a fine instrument.
