Gryphon Audio Designs was founded in Denmark in 1985 by Flemming Rasmussen, a graphic designer and perfectionist. The company began with a single head amplifier and has since become a leading name in high-end audio. Since its inception, Gryphon has maintained its core principles: pure Class A operation, true dual-mono construction, zero negative feedback, and industrial design that matches the innovation of its engineering.

A Gryphon product is instantly recognizable for its monumental black design, glowing green displays, and exceptional build quality. Its sound is equally distinctive, offering effortless power, precise control, and a silent background that allows music to emerge with remarkable clarity.

Today, Gryphon offers integrated and separate amplifiers, digital sources, phono stages, and loudspeakers, all developed and manufactured in Denmark. Gryphon does not follow trends or build to price points; it creates statement products.

Pure Class A, Zero Compromise

Gryphon's engineering philosophy prioritizes design elements many manufacturers have abandoned because of cost, weight, and efficiency concerns. These include pure Class A output stages that remain active at all times, true dual mono construction with two fully independent amplifiers in a single chassis, and separation down to the transformers. Gryphon also avoids global negative feedback to preserve musical integrity, and employs DC coupling from input to output, ultra-wide bandwidth, and exceptionally robust power supplies.

This commitment yields both measurable and audible benefits. Gryphon amplifiers double their output power each time the loudspeaker impedance is halved; for example, the flagship Apex delivers 225 watts of pure Class A into 8 ohms and continues doubling down to 1 ohm. As a result, the amplifier provides consistent current delivery to any loudspeaker, ensuring immediate response without distortion or compression.

Both listeners and critics note the amplifier's silent background, powerful bass, and absence of electronic coloration. The amplifier is designed to be transparent, allowing only the music’s scale, texture, and dynamic range to be experienced.

These design choices contribute to the substantial weight and cost of Gryphon components. Achieving uncompromised Class A performance requires large heatsinks, oversized transformers, and meticulous hand assembly. Rasmussen’s guiding principle remains: if a shortcut affects sound quality, it is not taken.

From Diablo to Apex — and Beyond

Amplification is at the core of the range. The Diablo 333 integrated amplifier, successor to the renowned Diablo 300, incorporates flagship technology in a single chassis and is widely considered the finest integrated amplifier available. Above it are the separates: the Commander preamplifier with its dedicated power supply tower, and the Apex power amplifiers, available in stereo or mono, which represent some of the most ambitious Class A designs produced.

Digital sources reflect the same philosophy. The Ethos CD player and DAC modules apply Gryphon's uncompromising standards to both file and disc playback. Dedicated phono stages, such as the Commander Phono, support the analogue front end with dual-mono architecture.

The loudspeakers complete the system. The EOS 2 and EOS 5 deliver high-end performance in a compact, elegant form. The Kodo flagship, a four-tower system, is designed to partner with the Apex mono amplifiers in statement installations. Gryphon speakers feature constant-phase crossovers and drivers matched to the amplifiers, creating a unified system engineered as a single instrument from source to sound.

All products are built in Denmark in strictly limited quantities. Chassis are machined from thick aluminium plate, and finishes are automotive-grade. Assembling a single Apex requires days of meticulous work. Here, craftsmanship is not a marketing term but a production standard the company embraces.

Design as Bold as the Sound

Founded by a designer, Gryphon maintains that a reference component should reflect its status. The black monolithic architecture, symmetrical towers, and glowing displays are as distinctive as the Class A output stages. A Gryphon system makes a visual statement even before it is powered on.

The aesthetics serve a functional purpose. Massive heatsink walls, twin transformer housings, and point-symmetrical layouts all reflect the dual-mono engineering within. Form follows current.

Gryphon designs for longevity. A model from the nineties remains contemporary and can still be serviced by the factory. These components are intended to last for decades and are often passed on rather than replaced.

Why choose Gryphon?

At the highest level of amplifier design, many products excel, but only a few achieve legendary status. For forty years, Gryphon has remained among these select few without compromising its standards.

The practical advantage is control. Gryphon amplifiers handle demanding loudspeakers, including those with low impedance, complex phase angles, or insensitive drivers, with ease. Their pure Class A dual-mono design ensures consistent, effortless performance with any load, at any volume, in any environment. Once you choose Gryphon, amplification is no longer a concern; future upgrades focus on sources and speakers, not power.

The emotional impact is best experienced firsthand, which is why we encourage auditions. Gryphon’s sound is often described as physical, with bass you can feel, sudden dynamic shifts, and a silence between notes that brings quiet recordings vividly to life. It delivers a sense of weight and drama that distinguishes it from more restrained high-end systems.

Gryphon components also retain exceptional value over time. Limited production, heirloom-quality construction, and ongoing factory support in Denmark ensure strong resale value. A Diablo or Apex is an investment that is often passed down rather than depreciated.

A complete Gryphon system—including source, amplification, and EOS or Kodo loudspeakers—eliminates compatibility concerns. With a unified design philosophy and consistent performance, it offers a direct path to high-end audio for those seeking maximum impact with minimal risk.
